Vestibular & Balance Rehabilitation
Welcome to Balance Concepts!

The home of skilled Vestibular and Balance Rehabilitation! The vestibular system is a true work of art. This tiny system of semi-circular canals and otoliths~ the saccule and utricle are responsible for communicating where we are in space. The brain organizes the information from the vestibular system along with our visual and somatosensory systems to comprise our system of balance.
What to expect:
Success begins with a Comprehensive Vestibular & Balance Examination and Evaluation. The first session includes a neurological examination tailored to each patient's needs and leads into the rest of the vestibular and balance exam. Some highlights include examining the vestibulo-ocular system, and measuring balance and gait skills. Balance Concepts, PC provides Infrared Video Goggle Exam for in-person appointments. Vertigo tests are typically provided at the end of the session. Because the examination and evaluation process is so thorough, it is often necessary to divide the testing procedures across two sessions. For simple vestibular pathologies such as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, BPPV, treatment sessions span 1-3 visits. For other pathologies with resultant weakness in one vestibular system such as after vestibular neuritis, it may take 1-2 visits per week for 6-8 weeks. For concussion and other "central" pathologies (from the brain), it may take longer with a different approach. Hence, the comprehensive exam is key to define each plan of care.
Infrared Video Goggle Exam:
Room light suppresses reflexes from the inner ear to the eye muscles. Therefore, an infrared video goggle exam can reveal much about the inner ear by placing the eyes in the dark and watching how they respond with a few specialized tests. Specialized goggles place the eyes in the dark and record the reflexive movements with an infrared video camera. This information provides yet another level of vestibular physical therapy differential diagnostic information.
